Avinyó

The Matiners Fair in Avinyó is an event that commemorates the War of the Matiners, also known as the Second Carlist War, which took place in Catalonia between 1846 and 1849. This war marked a significant period in Catalan history, and Avinyó preserves two very representative witnesses of that time.

The first of these witnesses is the Battle of Avinyó, which took place on November 16, 1848. In this battle, the Isabeline army faced a large number of Carlist bands that had gathered in the surrounding area. This confrontation resulted in one of the few victories for the Carlist forces over the Isabeline troops, something that had a notable impact on the morale of those involved.

The second piece of evidence is the Soldiers' Tower, an optical telegraph tower built during the uprising. This tower was part of the communications network established by the Isabeline army throughout Catalonia, and today it stands as a historical landmark that reminds us of the military strategies of that period.

On the Sunday of the Matiners Festival, the streets of Avinyó are transformed into a vibrant stage with various historical reenactments. These performances illustrate the causes of the Matiners' Revolt and explain the events that took place in Avinyó during that turbulent time. Visitors can enjoy an immersive experience that transports them back in time.

Furthermore, the streets of the town center are filled with an atmosphere reminiscent of the mid-19th century, with a variety of stalls offering local products. Among the delicacies to be sampled are wine and pork products , which are essential to the region's cuisine. This fair is not only an opportunity to learn about history but also to savor the authentic flavors of the region.

It's a unique opportunity you can't miss!
