DO Alella: the smallest and closest designation of origin to Barcelona

The Alella DO is the smallest in area of all the wine-producing regions in Spain. Urban development pressure has reduced its surface area to a third of what it was in 1956, the year it was approved. The DO currently covers 18 municipalities in the province of Barcelona.

A fully Mediterranean climate along the beach coexists with a more continental microclimate in the interior. This small area has historically supplied wine to the Barcelona market.

The Alella DO is renowned for the quality of its white wines, both single-varietal and blended. They are produced in dry and white varieties, as well as in sweet and fortified varieties.

The main variety used to make wines is the white raisin, although white Garnacha is also used. Aromatic rosés are also made with Garnacha, Merlot, and Raisin Rocío, and, to a lesser extent, fruity and smooth reds made primarily with Garnacha Tinta and Merlot.

The vineyard area is 227 hectares, there are around 50 winegrowers and 9 bottling wineries, and the average annual production is around 4,000 hectare.
