DO Terra Alta: white Grenache and wines with a rural soul

The Terra Alta Designation of Origin is made up of the twelve municipalities of the Terra Alta region. It is the highest and southernmost designation of origin in Catalonia.

An authentic appellation marked by the wind, the landscape and the native variety

The sunny, dry climate and the slightly permeable clay soil produce powerful, high-alcohol wines. The terrain is varied, and the vines are grown both in valleys and plains, as well as on terraces that overcome the uneven terrain.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the organization of cooperatives was a catalyst. Today, eleven of the twelve municipalities in the designation of origin have a cooperative winery. The modernist wineries of Pinell de Brai and Gandesa, designed by architect Cèsar Martinell, are notable for their architectural value. The Regulatory Council of the Designation of Origin was established in 1972.

White wines made from the native Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo varieties stand out. The young white wines are fresh and balanced, and when aged in oak barrels, they have more body and alcohol.

The red wines are deep ruby in color and complex in structure, made with Mazuelo, Garnacha Tinta, and Garnacha Peluda grapes.

Fortified wines (Mistela, natural sweet wine, and rancio wine) are traditional, since the natural action of the north wind and high levels of sunlight allow for harvests rich in sugars.
