Between sea and mountains, the penedès

Less than an hour's drive from Barcelona, we find the Penedès and Alella region, a valley protected by the Montserrat mountain where we find natural parks, mountains and beautiful towns and cities with a perfect climate for growing high-quality grapes.

The roads of the Penedès run through a landscape dotted with vineyards bathed by the sun and the Mediterranean Sea, pine forests, and scattered villages steeped in history, tradition, and culture.

There are different ways to get to know the area, through a walk or bike ride through the vineyards, with a meal with unique and local products such as xató, a festival with history such as the Filoxera Festival in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia (September), an authentic Castellera diada in Vilafranca del Penedès, a visit to one of its castles... or even with a good glass of cava!

CAVA, THE SPARKLING WINE

Cava is the quintessential sparkling wine in Catalonia and fills every Catalan with pride. The best way to discover all the secrets of its production and find the variety we like best is to tour the wineries of the Penedès region!

Cava is a sparkling wine made using traditional methods typical of the Catalan region and adapted to the many grape varieties found in this area, such as Xarel·lo, Parellada, and Macabeo. Also, depending on the amount of sugar added to the wine and the aging time in the bottles, we find different varieties such as Bruts, Brut Natures, Dulces, and Rosés, as well as the increasingly popular rosés in recent years.

But what truly makes this cava unique are the special characteristics of the Penedès region; the aging of the grape juice in large underground cellars; the care with which the grapes are grown, cared for, and harvested; and the tradition and production techniques of the wineries.

Between the sea and the mountains, these wines are the result of many families' long professional journey toward excellence. A DO with different microclimates, soils, and landscapes, from the green of the mountains to the blue of the sea, which contributes great diversity to its wines.

We'd like to suggest a perfect plan for exploring the Penedès region, discovering some of the best Catalan cava wineries and the best natural landscapes: Camins del Cava. An initiative of the Cava Producers Association, AECAVA.

CAVA PATHS

Cava Routes is a wine tourism proposal that combines walks through the vineyards of Penedès and Alella , on foot or by bicycle, around Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, Vilafranca del Penedès and Alella, with visits to wineries and fine dining in local restaurants.

Through the interactive website with geolocation (no app required) www.caminsdelcava.com, you'll find all the information you need to create your own itinerary. It consists of a network of paths (tracks and trails) that gives you the freedom to choose the route you want to follow, making it as easy as possible to access the rest of the wineries from any winery. You'll also find winery opening hours, the time it takes to complete each section, information on restaurants, accommodations, and other points of interest such as shops, bike rental companies, parking, and museums.

This web application is a new way to discover the region and sustainably explore cava culture. In this first phase of the project, 22 participating wineries from Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, along with the neighboring areas of Subirats and Torrelavit, are participating.
