We propose a route to learn about the medieval structure of Sant Feliu de Pallerols (Girona). It is an urban itinerary of about 1,300 meters long that allows us to know how this nucleus of the Gironès evolved from the houses of La Sagrera and the Romanesque church in the 13th century, to the walled Cellera in the 14th century and the current town. The route covers the most relevant elements of the historic center of Sant Feliu de Pallerols and lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
House of Francisco de Verntallat
The itinerary begins at the house of Francisco de Verntallat, located right at the end where today is the monument dedicated to the contribution that Francisco de Verntallat made in the fifteenth century to the fight for the freedom of men and women. peasants in the war of the Remensas.
Can Houses
Modernist house with three floors, which preserves the modernist details of the forge, the glazed ceramics and the colored glass. On the river side, the solution of the three-story gallery supported by masonry tiles, the work of railway engineers, is curious.
wall and valleys
The current Calle de los Valls retains the structure of the old alley that separated the houses from the wall and its valleys. Arranged around the outside of the houses, the Plaza de la Cellera and the Plaza de la Sagrera reach the Portal de Mar, at the southern end, which was the only possible entrance to the walled area, before opening onto the street on the side of the Casa de Francis of Verntallat.
Parish Church of Sant Feliu de Pallerols
Restored after the earthquakes of the s. XV, neo-Gothic style (16th and 17th centuries), its north-south orientation is curious, configuring some narrow alleys in the part of the apse since originally its orientation was east-west like most Romanesque churches.
Houses of the Sagrera
They are the houses that, 30 steps from the church, by order of Abbot Oliva with the Lord's Peace and Truce, enjoyed protection against theft and attacks by feudal lords.
La Conqueta Mill and the Fair
Flour mill from the end of the 13th century, restored and put into operation (visits arranged in advance at the municipal tourist office). We find the Ferial, surrounded by houses from the 16th and 17th centuries in the south-east and from the 17th and 19th centuries along the north-west. In the middle we find the modernist fountain, known as "the lake", because of the frozen trickles that are made in winter.
Rosary Chapel
Renaissance chapel, which served as a parish church in the 16th century. The semicircular crowning of the façade, the octagonal bell tower and the numerical hieroglyph on the lintel that hides the year of restoration stand out.
the jetty
Known as Can Manel, it is the work of the railway engineers who were then working on the construction of the Olot Train. The high porch made of red masonry and high pointed arches stand out. It worked as a jetty to transport the blocks of ice that came from the mountain.
Rectory and Calle del Puig
It still preserves the inscription of the "National Schools" on the façade, today at the highest point of the town with a large patio and orchards around it. Next, we find Calle del Puig, the result of the extension of the town from the 16th century, which goes uphill to Can Ventura at the top. Next we find the Casas de San Sebastián, in the street of the blacksmiths and those who worked metal, surely the origin of the street was Roman and it was very active during the Middle Ages.
Chapel of San Sebastian
At the end of Calle de San Sebastián, next to the river, we find the chapel. This should already exist in Roman times, next to the Roman road or old royal road. This road was used to go from town to town, from Sant Feliu de Pallerols to Les Planes, but also to join the valley of Hostoles with the Vall d'en Bas.
