Montferrer i Castellbò

Montferrer and Castellbo is a municipality in the northeast of the Alt Urgell playing culd neighboring county. It is the largest municipality in the whole region and includes almost thirty entities, among which we highlight Montferrer, Castellbo, Sant Joan de l'Erm, Solans or Balcó the Pyrenees. Since the term is so great pass several rivers, streams and even irrigation within the municipality. All entities are spread over three valleys: the main and wider the historic center of Castellbo vizcondado, the other two are smaller and they have subsidiaries between them.

This is a municipality within the Alt Urgell, training is relatively recent, which was created in 1970 from a first marriage and the various entities that have been including other in later years. The municipality of Montferrer and Castellbo is integrated in the Natural Park of the High Pyrenees.

Historically Castellbo vizcondado is related to which it was named, but even in the eleventh century-Castell named lleó Valley.

Within the municipality of Montferrer and Castellbo found some characteristic elements. Castellbo find the remains of the walls of the old castle and the parish church dedicated to Santa Maria, Gothic. There is also an old and small bridge located within the term of Sant Joan de l'Erm, where it is said that the Holy Grail was located for a time. A fire destroyed it and so today we can only see the remains. Within this period we find a ski slope of about 50 kilometers in total. In Sant Andreu de Castellbo found a Romanesque church and Albet find another dedicated to Sant Martí.

There are other remains within the term of Montferrer and Castellbo as are those of the ancient priory of Santa Maria in Costoja or the monastery of Santa Cecilia of Elins.
