Savallà del Comtat

Province: Tarragona | Shire: Conca de Barberà | Inhabitants: 71 | Extension: 14,8 Km2 | Altitude: 825 m

The town of Savallà del Comtat (847 m) is on the slopes of a hill crowned by the remains of the old castle, around which, and on the south side, the houses were built in stages. Savallà Castle was one of the most important stately residences in the region. With elements from earlier periods, the building was built mainly at the end of the 15th century and in the 16th century —as evidenced by its flowery Gothic and Renaissance windows— and it was the habitual residence of the Boixadors and later the Counts of Savallà, until the 15th century. XVII. With the abandonment by the counts, the palace castle gradually deteriorated and also suffered serious damage during the Carlist wars of the 19th century (the residents of the town were forced to carry bundles of firewood to burn the castle).
