The International Museum Day (DIM) is celebrated annually on May 18. It is an event organized by the International Committee of Museums (ICOM) since 1977, which aims to raise awareness among citizens about the role of museums in the development of societies.

On the occasion of the International Museum Day, a large part of the Catalan museum facilities organize a series of activities that take place on May 18 and / or in days before and after this date, either in the form of specific events such as programming that They can last a whole day or several days.

The most attractive and popular events of the DIM are the days of open doors that the museums offer for free to their visitors; as well as the celebration of the Night of Museums, an initiative of the Council of Europe, during which several museums in the country open their doors beyond their usual hours and after midnight with an extensive program of activities.

Other highlights of the International Museum Day are historical reenactments, conferences, guided tours, concerts or workshops.
