Christmas and Three Kings Day celebrations in Montblanc

Montblanc celebrates the Christmas and Three Kings holidays once again!

Origin

Christmas in Montblanc is a family affair, with streets and squares illuminated and filled with Christmas carols. Nativity scenes and the Tió de Nadal (a traditional Catalan Christmas log) bring joy to the children. For years, the Montblanc Hiking Club has carried a nativity scene up to the Hermitage of Sant Joan on a nighttime hike, a tradition also observed by the hermits of Sant Joan in the morning.

On December 28th, the Day of the Holy Innocents, children used to play with paper dolls, a tradition that has fallen out of use. On the 31st, the Home dels Nassos (Big Nose Man) parades through the streets and squares accompanied by music and handing out sweets to children. In the afternoon, the Athletic Club organizes the San Silvestre fun run.

On Three Kings' Night, the parade used to include trumpeters, an angel, and the three Kings with their entourage, who then distributed toys to the houses, a recently revived tradition.

Celebration

On Christmas Eve, many Montblanc residents make the Tió de Nadal (a traditional Catalan Christmas log) "poop" in the Plaça Major (Main Square) and attend Midnight Mass. On Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Eve, Els Pastorets, a Christmas play, is performed continuously in Montblanc since 1939.

On December 31st, the Home dels Nassos walks through the streets and squares accompanied by music and handing out sweets to children.

A few days before Three Kings Day, the postman collects the children's letters for the Three Wise Men. On the eve of Three Kings Day, the traditional parade fills the main streets and squares of Montblanc with wonder and magic.
