Transhumance Festival in Santa Margarida i els Monjos

The Transhumance Festival returns once again this fall to Santa Margarida i els Monjos!

For several days, the municipality becomes the scene of activities centered around the Marina Livestock Trail, the ancient route that connects Cerdanya with the Penedès region and keeps alive the memory of the herds' passage through Catalonia.

The program includes a variety of activities designed for all ages. The kickoff of the festival features cultural activities such as storytelling and family shows, which introduce the little ones to the pastoral imagination. One of the most anticipated experiences is the herd arrival walk, where participants can accompany the shepherds and experience the animals' journey firsthand, just as it was done in ancient times.

The highlight of the celebration is the Transhumance Fair, with a market filled with local products: wines, cavas, cheeses, and cured meats, as well as displays of crafts and vendors. Visitors can get up close and personal with the local shepherds' sheep and goats, enjoy demonstrations such as traditional milking and fresh cheese making, and experience children's shows and parades that fill the streets with a festive atmosphere. The gathering of shepherds and the exhibition of the "Bailes de Pastorets y Pastoretes" (Shepherds' and Shepherdesses' Dances) highlight the cultural and identity-based dimension of the event.

The festival culminates with the farewell walk of the herd, when the animals resume their journey towards the coast, and with complementary activities such as nature workshops and printing at the Molí del Foix.

The Transhumance Festival is, ultimately, a tribute to an ancient craft and at the same time an opportunity to discover the rich heritage, gastronomy, and culture of the Penedès, connecting past and present in a unique setting.
