Every last Saturday of the month, at 11 a.m., you have the opportunity to attend a guided tour of Pau Costa's Baroque altarpiece in the Parish of Santa Maria de Arenys.

In the 18th century, Arenys de Mar was a prominent town on the Catalan coast, with a busy social, cultural and economic life! That's why, between 1706 and 1711, the Baroque altarpiece of the Church of Santa María was built, the work of the sculptor Pau Costa. Dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady, it was almost entirely financed by the town itself. Gilded with gold leaf and polychromed by the Viñals masters, it depicts scenes from the life of Mary, with saints and angels, and includes Saint Zeno, the patron saint of Arenys.

Another notable altarpiece, that of Sant Martí de Arenys de Munt, the work of Agustí Pujol (1690), was destroyed in 1936, and only three panels remain in the Arenys de Mar Museum. In the museum, in room 3, you can also see a photo of the original altarpiece.

In 2014, a major restoration of the altarpiece of Santa María was completed, restoring its original polychrome. It can be visited Tuesday through Saturday (morning and afternoon) and on Sunday mornings. The museum also features a collection of minerals related to the search for gold used in the altarpiece's finish.
