July 3, International Plastic Bag Free Day

03/07/2025

International Plastic Bag Free Day, celebrated every July 3, is a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastic bags on the environment and promoting sustainable alternatives. The day aims to make citizens, governments and businesses reflect on the urgent need to reduce our dependence on plastic, especially those products that have a very short lifespan but a very long environmental impact.

Plastic bags are one of the most common types of waste found in oceans, rivers, and natural spaces. They take hundreds of years to decompose and are often ingested by marine animals, endangering wildlife and entering the food chain. Furthermore, their production generates polluting emissions and requires nonrenewable resources such as oil.

To address this problem, many cities and countries have implemented policies to reduce or ban plastic bags, promoting the use of reusable or compostable bags. However, real change begins with each person's attitude. Actions as simple as carrying a cloth bag when shopping can have a significant impact if adopted widely.
