Montblanc Festival

According to tradition, the Greek princess Irene Láscaris passed through Montblanc on her way to Zaragoza, carrying an image of the Virgin Mary. Upon reaching a hill near the town, the oxen pulling her carriage stopped and would not go any further. This was interpreted as a sign that the image wanted to remain there. The princess requested permission from King James II to build a convent, and thus the Monastery of La Serra was born in 1296.

Since then, the Poor Clare nuns have venerated the Virgin of the Sierra, who became the patron saint of Montblanc and a symbol of great devotion among the population. Her canonical coronation in 1906 marked a historic event, and since then, it has been commemorated with an extraordinary celebration every 25 years.

The Montblanc Festival has been officially celebrated on September 8th since 1930 and is notable for its wide variety of recreational, cultural, sporting, and festive events. One of the most anticipated moments is the performance by local folklore groups in the Plaza Mayor on September 8th and 9th.
