The Faults of Andorra
The burning of falles in Andorra is a deeply rooted popular tradition celebrated on Saint John's Eve, in the parishes of Andorra la Vella, Sant Julià de Lòria, Escaldes-Engordany, Encamp, Canillo and La Massana, combining fire, ritual and culture. Participants spin falles which, once lit, create spectacular balls of fire while moving through the streets of the historic centre in a lively procession filled with light, music and festive atmosphere.
The celebration begins at the Puial square with the baptism of fire, one of the most symbolic moments, when 16-year-olds become part of the adult fallaires. This ritual is carried out with the traditional falla and represents generational continuity within the festival. The procession then continues through several emblematic squares where the tradition was once celebrated, maintaining a strong connection with history and place.
Throughout the route, fallaires spin the fire to the rhythm of music, creating a unique visual spectacle. The event concludes with the lighting of a large bonfire in Plaça Guillemó and traditional dances such as the Dance of the Witches, adding a strong cultural and symbolic component.
The falles are made using a metal mesh structure, similar to chicken wire, forming a resistant cage. Inside, paper or combustible material is placed, which, when lit, generates the fire and allows the characteristic fireballs to form as they are spun during the procession.
Recognised as intangible cultural heritage of Andorra, this celebration is one of the country's most representative traditions, capable of transmitting emotion, identity and heritage from generation to generation.
