Route of the Castles of Sió

Conquered by the Andalusians in the middle of the 11th century, the banks of the Sió river soon saw the proliferation of a large number of castles and churches. Between the castles that give name to this route they emphasize successively those of Montcortès (1095), l'Aranyó (year 1120), Concabella (year 1031), Pallargues (in 1040) and Ratera. All were reformed in modern times to turn them into castle-palace. The castle of Concabella houses the Interpretation Center of the Sió Castles and the Pallargues Castle is also open to the public.

Among the churches, the first one is Sant Esteve de Pelagalls, consecrated in 1180, with an original and rich iconography cover. Also interesting are the churches of Sant Salvador de Concabella, a 13th-century building with Romanesque façade, and the small church of Sant Pere de Muller.

The Route of the Castles of the Sió runs basically by a flat zone furrowed by the river Sió, dominated by the cultures of barley and wheat. Only the remains of old vines and a small irrigation on the banks of the Sió defy extreme weather and, above all, an important summer drought that explains the presence of an El Canós agrometeorological observatory .
