Spring is the season of rebirth that will last until June, which is when it gives way to summer.

At this time of year, temperatures begin to rise gradually, the days get longer, the landscapes change color, many flowers bloom, and animals begin to pair up...

For all these reasons, spring is known as synonymous with life, youth, beauty, and vitality. In the artistic sphere, it is also considered the season of love and joy, as exemplified by the saying "spring fever."

This explosion of the senses and of nature coincides with many celebrations that commemorate the beginning of this time of year, which are characterized by a significant presence of flowers.

Some of the festivities organized in our territory for this reason are the Temps de Flors fair in Girona, the Santpedor en flor Fair in Santpedor, which also celebrates a winter edition or Flors i Violes de Palafrugell.

Girona, Temps de Flors

If we head north to Catalonia, Girona smells of flowers.

In this town, the Girona, Temps de Flors competition is held annually, which already has a consolidated history, since it was organized for the first time in 1954.

Its origins, then, lie in a flower competition that began in the 1960s and consisted of a floral exhibition displayed in a specific location. However, in 1992, this exhibition expanded throughout the old town of Girona, giving rise to floral routes through the squares, streets, and hidden corners of the city's historic center.

This event, held every May, lasts for a week and includes the traditional flower exhibition. Girona is adorned with floral motifs, from the streets and parks to the courtyards and gardens of private homes that are usually closed to the public. Furthermore, it has now become a cross-cutting event, encompassing initiatives such as shopkeepers decorating their windows with floral displays and hoteliers embellishing their rooms. It's also worth noting that some restaurants have created menus incorporating edible flowers.

As for the name of the celebration, it is due to a motto coined by the poet José Tarrés in 1993.

Santpedor in bloom

Santpedor, in the Bages region, was the first municipality to join the Viles Florides group. For this reason, the municipality maintains a strong commitment to initiatives related to flowers and floral decoration.

Specifically, the town celebrates two flower-related fairs. During the first weekend of May , Santpedor en Flor (Santpedor in Bloom) takes place. Two action-packed days filled with activities where organizations, businesses, and residents bring the town's old quarter to life with a wide array of floral displays in various spaces, markets, tastings, guided tours, and other activities that put flowers at the center of attention.

The event also has a winter version held in December: the Santpedor in Winter Bloom Fair. The old town is filled with art, floral decorations, and culinary experiences adapted to the season. Among the offerings is a Christmas market featuring fir trees, poinsettias, and other festive decorations.

Flowers and Violets in Palafrugell

Around May 1st, Flors i Violes is celebrated in the town of Palafrugell to welcome spring and good weather.

To do this, they decorate the town's courtyards and streets, filling them with flowers, scents, colors, music, shows, books, artistic decorations, and tastings.

In addition, the activities are not only dedicated to flowers, but also include artistic and musical performances, tastings of culinary products for food lovers, or taking a walk enjoying the colors of spring.
